Rockford scores five first-half touchdowns in win
By Jeff Chaney / The Grand Rapids Press
HOLT -- The Rockford
football team was downright offensive Friday night.
A week after putting up just 10 points in a first-round playoff
game against Grandville, Rockford's offense came out against
host Holt and scored five first-half touchdowns.
That propelled the Rams to a 46-7 win and the team's third consecutive
Division 1 district championship.
Rockford travels to
Highland Milford next Saturday to take on the Mavericks at 1
p.m. for
a regional title. Milford beat Flint
Carman-Ainsworth on Friday. "
I am very pleased. It was a total team effort," said Rockford coach
Ralph Munger, whose team improved to 10-1. "Our offense put some things
together that produced some very quick points. I was pleased with the line's
effort, with
the way the backs ran the ball and (quarterback Tom) Fusee's effort."
Fusee
sparks offense early Fusee had the Rockford offense rolling in the first
half. He started the game with a 12-yard completion and never looked back
until
being pulled with
the
rest of the first-team offense early in the second half. He completed 8-of-9
passes in the first half for 183 yards and two scores. One was a 5-yard
strike to senior wide receiver Callan Sherd and the other
a 16-yarder
to senior running back Michael Mudgett.
"
I just did my job," Fusee said. "I just put the ball in the receivers'
hands, and they did the rest. It wasn't just me, my line did a great job,
the backs did a great job, and the receivers did a great job. It was a
total team
effort."
Senior running back
Zach Breen did most of the damage, rushing for 86 yards on eight
carries and two scores before halftime. Breen's night ended when
he had a 70-yard touchdown run 20 seconds into the second half
that made the score 40-7.
At that time, Munger cleared his bench and got a lot of reserves playing
time.
"
You have to give them their due," said Holt coach Mike Smith, whose
team ends its season 9-2. "They are a very good football team. They
scored every time they had the ball in the first half. The better team
won tonight, that's
the bottom line."
Now Munger must get
ready to match wits with a former player. Milford coach Pat Fox
played line for Munger in the early 1980s while he was coaching
at Frankenmuth. "
This is a player's game," Munger said. "Pat and I go way
back. But this isn't about us; this is a player's game."
