Local stars among Class A's best

Callan Sherd
doesn't really care about individual stats. He just cares how
his Rockford football team is doing. Good thing for the 6-foot-1,
180-pound senior wide receiver/defensive back that the Rams have
been just as successful as he has been
on the football field. Sherd, who will try to help Rockford win
its third straight Division 1 state championship today at Ford
Field, leads a strong class
of area players to be
named to the AP Class A all-state team this year.
Sherd, Rockford teammate
Zach Breen, Lowell teammates Keith Nichol -- who was named this
year's
Player of the Year in Class A -- Mike McElroy and Kam Blake
and Grandville's Aaron Szarowicz were all named to this year's first team."
This has been great," said Sherd, who along with Nichol is making a
return trip to the first team. "All of our hard work has paid off. " But
all of this individual stuff doesn't matter, because the only thing that
really matters is how we do as a team."
Sherd, a three-year
starter for the Rams and was named to the team as a specialist,
has seven interceptions,
one fumble recovery on defense, and 35 receptions
for 686 yards and eight touchdowns on offense this season. Sherd also has
returned 22 punts for 229 yards.
Breen, also a senior
and three-year starter for Rockford at running back, has 1,377
yards on 182
carries and 19 touchdowns in 2006 and was named
to the team
as a running back. "
This is pretty cool," Breen said. "This is one of the greatest
honors you can have."
